New PTA taxes on OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, 8T and 8T+ 5G (January 2023)

The Federal Board of Revenue is responsible for setting and collecting taxes on smartphones. Our national telecom regulator Pakistan Telecommunication Authority gives suggestions and executes the taxes. Lately we’ve covered the PTA taxes on a number of smartphones and we’re back with yet another list of taxes, this time on the OnePlus 8 series. The smartphone series has a stylish look with quality specifications. The series includes OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus 8T and OnePlus 8T 5G. You would expect the PTA taxes on these phones to be exorbitant, as we’ve seen on other flagship devices like the iPhone 14 and the Galaxy S22. Fortunately, this is not the case and taxes are relatively low, as shown in the table below.

We cannot understand the formula used by the FBR and the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to levy smartphone tax. Because it’s strange that certain expensive smartphones are taxed much more than their competitors.
