Instagram refreshes home screen – Wave Goodbye to shopping tab

Are you one of those people who were quite annoyed with the new shop button just over the “New message” button? If so, we have good news. Instagram is revamping the home screen that was due to appear in February, removing the shop tab and moving the Create button back to the center of the navigation bar. This configuration has sidelined the Reels tab.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri posted a video revealing that shopping, while not prominent as before, will still be present in your feed, stories and ads. Now, however, there won’t be a dedicated tab for it. In view of this, the company will provide users with targeted recommendations to encourage shopping beyond the usual mid-feed offerings.

This new design now launched started testing in September. While announcing the rollout, Mosseri characterized the refresh as something to make the application easier to use and the company’s main focus will be connecting people to the things they love. However, this change could indicate a bigger strategy to get rid of many shopping features, as revealed in a report from Verge. The social media will be more dependent on the ad revenue and will focus on such efforts.

Apart from that, the app continuously tries to compete with TikTok and take inspiration from it to make itself simpler. By copying TikTok’s “new post” button placement, the company aims to become the best in the business. With this strategy, people could consider posting more often, which will increase app usage in the future.
