Simple steps to create virtual machines with VirtualBox

We’ll share some simple steps that can get you started. Here’s how you can create virtual machines with VirtualBox at Windows.

Important: We will be using a Windows XP ISO file to demonstrate creating a virtual machine. You must follow the same steps for other ISO files that you want to install on a virtual machine.

1. First, download and install VirtualBox on your computer.

2. When the app installs, open it from the Home menu or the desktop shortcut.

3. When you open the program for the first time, you will see a screen like the one below.

5. Select ‘New‘ from the list of options that appears.

6. Now you will see the Create virtual machine Fast.

7. Assign a name to your virtual machine, and select the folder where you want to save your files.

8. On the ISO image, click the drop-down list and select ‘Other‘. Next one, select the ISO file of the operating system you want to install.

9. Then tick the ‘Skip unattended installationoption and click the Next one knob.

10. Now, on the Hardware prompt, select the Base Memory (RAM) and Processor (CPU Cores) and click the Next one knob.

Important: Base memory should be more than what the operating system requires. For example, Windows XP requires a minimum of 512 MB of memory; therefore you need to put 1024 MB in the VirtualBox. You will be fine if you assign the recommended hardware requirements for the operating system.

11. Next, on the virtual hard disk prompt, select ‘Create a virtual hard disk now’option and assign the disk size. When you’re done, click the Next one knob.

12. Confirm all your selections on the Resume and click the Finish knob.

13. The virtual machine is created. Now you can run the virtual machine by clicking it Get started knob.

That is it! Depending on the ISO file you selected, you will have to go through the operating system installation wizard.

How to edit virtual machine in VirtualBox

You don’t need to delete the entire virtual machine to make some changes. You can edit the virtual machines you created in simple steps without deleting them.

1. On the right side, select the virtual machine you want to edit.

2. Once selected, click on the Institutions icon at the top.

3. You will find several options to edit. For example, if you want to increase the RAM of your virtual machine, switch to the System tab.

4. Then adjust the base memory, processor, etc. After making the changes, click the OK knob.

5. Similarly, you can customize display, storage, network and many other things.

That is it! This allows you to edit virtual machines in VirtualBox without deleting them.
