Apple Achieves Highest Smartphone Market Share Ever in Q4 2022: Report
The smartphone market has been in decline since the first quarter of 2022 and many expected a downward trend for the coming year. The latest Canalys report confirmed their claims. In addition to the mobile industry, we have all experienced the ups and downs of a global economy that is one day characterized by a shortage of chips and the next day by increased inflation.
Smartphone manufacturers are in a similar situation to consumers. While the market showed some signs of growth in the third quarter of 2022, global revenues were down 3% year-on-year. Global smartphone shipments fell 17% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to research firm Canalys, contributing significantly to an 11% decline in full-year shipments.

Just as manufacturers were overcoming significant supply-side obstacles, demand for mid-range and low-end phones accelerated. The premium sector, which has shown resilience so far, is also showing signs of weakness. Nevertheless, Silicon Valley giant Apple was the best performer in terms of market share during the quarter, with a share of 25%. It is the highest market share ever recorded by Canalys compared to Samsung’s 20% share. On the other hand, Samsung remained the leading OEM in 2022 with 22% of shipments, an increase of two percentage points from the previous year.
Looking ahead, Canalys analyst Le Xian Chiew anticipates the emergence of smaller players. In addition, Xian said,
While inflationary pressures will gradually ease, the effects of interest rate hikes, economic slowdowns and an increasingly difficult labor market will limit market potential. This will have a negative impact on saturated mid to high end dominated markets such as Western Europe and North America.
